Clap 'Cause It Feels Good

New work :: Clap ‘Cause It Feels Good, 2020, acrylic on panel, 14” x 11”

There’s no denying that the energy around us has been visceral this year. I can’t think of another word that fits so well. Sometimes, it felt as though our nerves were being stretched to their snapping point with stress, anger, anxiety and grief.

But then, we also found moments of hope, life and laughter amid the madness. Finding space to revel in the simplest of uplift; a dance, humor, making eye contact with strangers over masks hiding our smiles, but not the humanity in our eyes.

Clap ‘cause it feels good, that’s the only justification you need.

Studio 10.04.13

Had my first hours-long studio session since the show opened last month. It felt good to be back at it, trying to make sense of ideas that have been in my head for some time now...

Studio 8.01.12: trust

In progress on the right.

A currently untitled piece. I'm usually reticent to trust my feelings about a piece just after I choose to stop working on it, but sometimes you have to live in that moment and try to trust the feeling especially if it's a positive response. My default is to question my early positive responses and let things settle in for a while.

When I took the brush away from this piece for the last time yesterday (and stopped myself from doing anything more on it), I was quite happy with it. I'm sure that I'll look at it in more depth the next time that I'm in the studio, but for now, it still strikes a positive chord with me.

Studio: 6.06.12

Above: Views of new collages using dried paint and tape. It's an ongoing project making use of what would be cast-off bits from other art making in the studio.

A couple of new large works on paper.

It's really exciting to keep discovering new things about how materials work under different conditions. Sometimes the simplest of tweaks can result in the opening of huge possibilities for the work. This is one of the reasons why I keep working. There's an almost head-spinning giddy feeling that I get when I do something and recognize in the moment the potential that lies in whatever action(s) I took, regardless of if it's useful now or not. I know that its there and I can't wait to get to the next piece where I can explore that thing more fully.

in progress

I've been working on a rather large (for me) canvas in the studio lately. It measures 6 1/2 feet x 11 1/2 feet and so far, things are going ok with it. These early stages are all about establishing a matrix that I can react against in later layers. I still don't know where it's going to wind up, but I'm at a point where things slow down a bit and I'll take more time evaluating what I want to do in the upcoming and final states.
