Clap 'Cause It Feels Good

New work :: Clap ‘Cause It Feels Good, 2020, acrylic on panel, 14” x 11”

There’s no denying that the energy around us has been visceral this year. I can’t think of another word that fits so well. Sometimes, it felt as though our nerves were being stretched to their snapping point with stress, anger, anxiety and grief.

But then, we also found moments of hope, life and laughter amid the madness. Finding space to revel in the simplest of uplift; a dance, humor, making eye contact with strangers over masks hiding our smiles, but not the humanity in our eyes.

Clap ‘cause it feels good, that’s the only justification you need.

As mentioned in yesterday's post, here are four more paintings whose formal elements diverge from other things that I'm working on. While these paintings look drastically different in style from some of my other recent works, the geometric aspects mirror my explorations of hard-edged, almost minimal paintings dating back ten years. The mirroring is where the similarities stop. In these new paintings, I've taken a new-found fascination that I have with geometric forms and placed them in more conventional figure-ground compositions. In addition, I'm also looking for engaging ways of handling formal relationships between colors, edges, surfaces, foreground/background, etc...

Intersection II, 2008, acrylic on panel, 16" x 16"

Two new pieces completed in the last couple of weeks.

With all of the upheaval that is going on, the constant of art helping to keep me sane and looking forward. Can't wait to get back into my regular studio schedule. Having to move comes just as I'm gearing up to refine some new ideas and make larger pieces. At the very least, the motivation is there. All I need now is some open time again.
