Studio (6.20.12): Purple in progress

Works in progress. Something more purple this way comes...

I've had this thing for Dioxazine Purple lately. Well, actually, I've had a thing for it since I first saw Franz Kline's "Torches Mauve" at the Philadelphia Museum of Art years ago, as a kid. That painting made a serious imprint on my mind and was a huge reason (among others) for my moving to abstraction in the late 80's. They usually keep it out and I like to visit it once in a while just to stand there and stare in awe at it. I always feel like I'm visiting an old friend whenever I go to the museum. I also like to visit "Fifty Days at Illiam", aka, the Cy Twombly room , as well. There's usually no one back there, so I generally have that room to myself when I go.

I haven't been this obsessed with using a single color in a long time, and *gasp" (whispter) right out of the tube! That almost never happens with the colors I use, with a few exceptions, like certain yellows, blacks and whites. Most of the time, I'm trying to find some way to move a color away from it's original chromatic state, even if the change is barely perceptible to the viewer. It's exciting to see how many different ways a color can look and react when it's combined with another, and it's very likely that those mixed colors will appear to change again when placed next to or on top of another while painting. Oh, the possibilities...

Studio (6.15.12)

Three new paintings on paper. I had a sudden need to work with  purples and whites yesterday and may be expanding on this in the near future.

Studio: 6.06.12

Above: Views of new collages using dried paint and tape. It's an ongoing project making use of what would be cast-off bits from other art making in the studio.

A couple of new large works on paper.

It's really exciting to keep discovering new things about how materials work under different conditions. Sometimes the simplest of tweaks can result in the opening of huge possibilities for the work. This is one of the reasons why I keep working. There's an almost head-spinning giddy feeling that I get when I do something and recognize in the moment the potential that lies in whatever action(s) I took, regardless of if it's useful now or not. I know that its there and I can't wait to get to the next piece where I can explore that thing more fully.
